What is GLP-1 and how does it work?

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone that the body naturally produces in the intestines. Its job is to regulate blood sugar levels and send a signal to the brain that you are full. Modern drugs (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro) mimic this hormone, but they stay in the body much longer. They slow down the emptying of the stomach, so you feel fuller for longer, and they act on the satiety center in the brain, reducing hunger and food noise (constant thoughts about food).

What is the difference between Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro?

All of these drugs belong to the family of incretin mimetics, but differ in composition and purpose. Ozempic (Semaglutide) was originally developed and approved for type 2 diabetes; we use it especially for clients who primarily address glycemia and metabolic stability. Wegovy (Semaglutide) contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic but is officially approved and dosed for the treatment of overweight and obesity - it's our first choice and the gold standard for regular weight reduction. Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) is the latest generation, which also stimulates the GIP receptor in addition to GLP-1, making it slightly more aggressive in the rate of weight loss, which we use in specific, more complicated cases.

How are the medications administered and how often?

All of these medications are given once a week by subcutaneous injection (most often in the abdomen, thigh, or arm). The needles are very thin, similar to insulin, and the injection is painless for most people.

Since the drugs affect digestion, most side effects are gastrointestinal: nausea (especially after eating or when the dose is increased), a feeling of fullness or bloating, changes in bowel habits (constipation or diarrhea), and fatigue.
